The Wandering Earth is one of the highest grossing films to come out of China, existing solely on the box office there as its worldwide distribution has been handled by Netflix. It is a science fiction action film where the world had to escape from the Sun as it threatened to engulf the Earth. To do so everyone came together to build giant engines all over the earth, and created underground living conditions.

It sounds like a film that could be ripe for a crazy science fiction adventure, but in the end the actual story in The Wandering Earth is fairly uninspiring and generic. The film is never boring, and the central character’s Liu Qi’s relationship with his father is well explored throughout the film. When you do reach the end of the film, you do feel as though more could have been done with such an outlandish premise.
