I went to see the new Tarantino film Django Unchained and I’m going to kick off the review by saying if you like other Tarantino films (Pulp Fiction, Kill Bill, Inglourious Basterds) then you’ll love this. It really is a classic Tarantino film, with lots of over the top violence and swearing. Personally I loved it. The premise for this one is a western set in the deep South of America, two years before the outbreak of the civil war.

There have been complaints from some people about the amount the n word, but people do have to remember that in the time period that this is taking place, when slavery was still rampant, that this was a generally accepted and used term. Also I assume these people have never seen the Wire because that might cause them to go into shock.

As I said it’s a classic Tarantino film, and once again Quentin has got the perfect cast. Jamie Foxx as the lead character, Django, is awesome. It’s a great performance by Foxx and most importantly for a Tarantino lead, he’s cool. Christoph Waltz, whose been nominated for best supporting actor at the OSCARs, is again brilliant. He really does steal the show whenever he’s on screen because he just has such a great screen presence, just as was the case in Inglourious Basterds. Leonardo DiCaprio is the perfect choice for the villainous Calvin J. Candie, who is the owner of Django’s wife, and Samuel L. Jackson does a delightfully comic performance as the head of Candie’s household who ironically shares the “white folks” view on black people.

Of course it’s not just the performances that are great. It’s a great script again from Tarantino and great over the top blood everywhere moments, as per usual. All in all, a film I loved and can be summed up in two words… classic Tarantino.
