In 2017 we had The Book Of Henry and in 2016 we had Collateral Beauty. Now we have a new unintentional masterpiece in awful, Serenity.

Coming from Steven Knight, the man behind incredible shows such as Peaky Blinders and Taboo, not to mention films like Locke and Eastern Promises. It genuinely staggers me that a film as ridiculously bad as Serenity could come from such a great writer. Especially when you pair him with such a talented cast. Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, Diane Lane, Jason Clarke, and Djimon Hounsou all feature in the film, and yet there’s nothing really good here.

Now it is hard to really get into why Serenity is one of those so bad you have to see it to truly understand without spoiling what may be the worst twist in cinematic history, and that is something I just don’t want to do. The film takes such a ridiculous out of nowhere turn, that in no way fits with the film that has preceded it. It is hard to believe that anyone thought it would be a good idea, but people did.

And it is the fact that that people believed in this film that makes it so deliciously awful. Everyone involved is playing it with such seriousness that it just falls apart hilariously. If there was some notion that the film was ridiculous then that could have been played into, and it just wouldn’t have been memorable, but there is not a hint of self awareness in Serenity.

I seriously cannot stress enough how bad Serenity is, and how stupid it becomes. Do yourself a favour and go watch it, even knowing that it was due to go off the rails I couldn’t see the twist that was coming.
