It is time for this week’s movie news roundup, where I pick some of the stories that caught my eye over the last seven days.
Resident Evil reboot already on the cards – The Milla Jovovich Resident Evil franchise only just finished this year with the sixth and final film, Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, being released at the start of 2017. And now the game franchise will be getting another adaption. Martin Moszkowicz, the chairman Constantin Film the production company that owns the film rights to the series, confirmed to Variety that a reboot is already in the works. Some fans have hoped that the new series will be closer to the out and out horror of the game series, but Moszkowicz and Constantin Film have yet to reveal any further details.
Tom Holland is your Nathan Drake – Video Game adaptations have traditionally been received very poorly, but Sony are still hopeful that a film version of the Uncharted series can change that. Deadline reported that they have cast Tom Holland, who is also currently playing Spiderman, will take on a younger version of the main character Nathan Drake. The games have featured some sequences of a younger Nathan Drake, and it appears as though this will be the major inspiration behind the film’s story.
Zack Snyder steps away from Justice League – Sad news struck the world of film this week as Zack Snyder announced that his daughter recently committed suicide. Snyder told Hollywood Reporter that he had tried to go back to work on the upcoming Justice League but that “In the last two months, I’ve decided to take a step back from the movie to be with my family, be with my kids, who really need me. They are all having a hard time. I’m having a hard time”. Joss Whedon has stepped in to complete the postproduction on the film. My thoughts, as with much of the film community, go out to Snyder and his family.
Top Gun 2 confirmed – A sequel to the classic 1986 Tony Scott film Top Gun has been in the works for several years, but it wasn’t until this week that any serious movement appeared to be happening on the film. Whilst promoting his new film The Mummy Cruise confirmed the new, telling Australian morning show Sunrise that “It is definitely happening”. Cruise said that that filming is due to start in the next year. As of yet there isn’t much known about the sequel, but it looks like it will coming within the next couple of years.
Rosario Dawson joins the New Mutants – Last week it was officially confirmed that Maisie Williams and Anya Taylor-Joy had joined the cast of Fox’s New Mutants. Now the X-Men spinoff (may have/has just) landed a big name in the superhero world. Rosario Dawson has over the last couple of years made a name for herself as Claire Temple, the connective tissue between the Marvel/Netflix collaborations, and now she seems ready to jump into the X-Men Universe as she entered talks to join the cast of New Mutants. The character in question would be Dr. Cecilia Reyes, who acts as a mentor for the teenage team, and has the ability to create a Bio-Field around herself.
That is it for this movie news roundup. I would love to hear your thoughts on any of the stories from this week, and if there are any I’ve missed. Let me know in the comments.
