It is time for this week’s movie news roundup, where I pick some of the stories that caught my eye over the last seven days.
First Thor: Ragnarok Trailer – The first trailer for the upcoming Thor: Ragnarok debuted last Monday to a huge amount of views, and an overwhelming positive reaction. The trailer showcases the more colourful, less earth-based look of the upcoming third installment in the Thor franchise. The trailer showcases a lot of the new characters that will be appearing in the film, including Cate Blanchette as Hela, Jeff Goldblum as the Grandmaster, and Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie, as well as showing off the return of Loki, and The Hulk. It didn’t yet show us anything of Karl Urban as Skurge, or Sam Neill in his still unconfirmed role. One of the most praised elements of the trailer has been the humour that director Taika Waititi has brought into the trailer, particularly the last line “We’re friends from work”. The trailer is available to watch on Marvel’s YouTube Channel, and the film will be released on 3rd November 2017.
Jude Law to play younger Albus Dumbledore – After the release of Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them there was a lot of speculation as to whether the classic Harry Potter character Albus Dumbledore would appear after his lover Gellert Grindelwald was revealed at the end of the film. That will definitely be happening in the upcoming sequels to the film as Jude Law joined the cast as Dumbledore. He will play opposite Johnny Depp who appeared at the end of the first Fantastic Beasts as Grindelwald, and the film may show the romance between the two legendary wizards. The role of Dumbledore has previously been played by Richard Harris, who sadly passed away after Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, and Michael Gambon. You will be able to see Law as Dumbledore in the Fantastic Beasts sequel on 16th November 2018.
Cable is finally cast – After months of speculation as to who will be playing Cable in the upcoming sequel to 2016’s Deadpool, we finally have the answer, Josh Brolin. Amongst those who have been rumoured for the role have been Pierce Brosnan, Kyle Chandler, Brad Pitt, Stephen Lang, David Harbour, and Michael Shannon. But it is Josh Brolin, who is best known for his appearances in No Country for Old Men, Milk, and Sicario, who has won the role. This would not be the first major Marvel character that Brolin has played, as he is also appearing as the Big Bad of the Marvel Cinematic Universe Thanos. He will join up with Ryan Reynolds and the original cast, as well as Zazie Beetz as Domino. Deadpool 2 is currently scheduled for release in 2018.
The Last Jedi teaser arrives – It has been a long wait for Star Wars fans, but we finally got our first look at Episode VIII, titled The Last Jedi. The trailer was revealed during a panel for the film at Star Wars Celebration in Orlando Florida. You can find the teaser on the official Star Wars YouTube Channel, as well as my in depth thoughts on the trailer here. Star Wars: The Last Jedi is due to be released on 15th December 2017.
That is it for this movie news roundup. I would love to hear your thoughts on any of the stories from this week, and if there are any I’ve missed. Let me know in the comments.
