We’re here with another weekly roundup of the stories from the world of film that have caught my eye over the past week.

First images from Tomb Raider – The first images from the upcoming reboot of Tomb Raider have emerged. The images show Alicia Vikander in the main role as Lara Croft, taking on the role that Angelina Jolie played in two films. The video game franchise went through a successful reboot itself in 2013, and the parallels are clear to see in these images. There is not yet any footage released for the film, but it is due to be released on 16th March 2018.

R Rated Venom film in the works – After agreeing a deal with Disney and Marvel to collaborate on Spider-Man Homecoming it looks like Sony wants to make its comeback into the world of Superhero films. A Venom film was announced way back before the collaboration with Marvel, but it has now been announced that this will be released on 5 October 2018. Sony is hoping that an R Rated film starring one of Spider-Man’s key villains will be enough to launch their own Cinematic Universe. So far the only other information we really know is that it will be written by Alien: Covenant screenwriter Dante Harper.

Beyoncé for Nala? – According to Variety pop musician Beyoncé is director Jon Favreau’s first choice to play Nala in the upcoming Lion King live action adaptation. Donald Glover is currently announced to be playing the lead character Simba, whilst James Earl Jones will be returning to the role of Mufasa. Beyoncé has previously appeared in the third installment of the Austin Powers franchise, as well as roles in Dreamgirls and the thriller Obsessed, with Idris Elba.

Akira remake could have Get Out Director – Warner Brothers have been trying to make an adaptation of the classic 1988 Japanese Anime film Akira for some time. It appears that they now have their sights set on Get Out director Jordan Peele as the man they want to helm the project according to The Tracking Board. Akira is one of the seminal Japanese anime film, responsible for helping Japanese animation move closer to the mainstream. WB could be hoping that Ghost in the Shell is a commercial hit in order to use that as a springboard for their Akira project.

Joss Whedon’s Batgirl? – Acclaimed writer and director Joss Whedon is being sought after by Warner Bros. as the director for their future Batgirl film. Whedon, who is well know for his work on the TV Shows Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Firefly, last tackled the superhero world with his two Marvel’s Avengers films in 2012 and 2015. And now he said to be close to finalising a deal to write, direct, and produce Batgirl’s solo movie in the DC Extended Universe. This appointment could be seen a big change of direction for the DCEU as Whedon is a director and writer well know for bringing a lot of humour and comic relief to his films and TV shows, something that has been missing from the early DC films according to many of their critics.

Warner Brother’s face legal action over The Conjuring – The Conjuring franchise has been a huge hit for Warner Brothers with both films making over $300 million at the box office. But now, according to The Hollywood Reporter, author Gerald Brittle who wrote The Demonologist is suing the studio claiming that they illegally engaged in copyright infringement. As a result he is suing the company for the sum of a whopping $900 million. Brittle is alleging that he had an exclusive agreement with the paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren since 1978 that he had exclusive access to their cases and the stories inside. Warner Bros. have currently said that they have not yet been served with the lawsuit and declined to make any further statement at this time.

So those are some of the big stories from the last week. Leave your thoughts on any of the stories in the comments. Are there any other stories that caught your eye over the last week?
