Its time we go a bit more light hearted now, so lets turn up the funny and look at some of the best horror comedies. There are a lot of incredible horror comedies out there; in this post I am going to talk about what I consider to be the three best of these. But there are many others out there that are worth watching.

An American Werewolf In London – An American Werewolf in London was first film to truly nail the balance between horror and comedy. A hugely funny script is matched by genuine scares and gore galore. Probably best remembered from some truly groundbreaking effects. Most famously the scene where David transforms into a Werewolf for the first time that made use of some utterly brilliant practical special effects, and still holding up as well as anyone can manage today. The appearances of his friend Jack and later David’s victims are horrible, with bloody flesh hanging off them and huge gashes, is equally as impressive and horrifying. But all of this is well counteracted by the humour running throughout the film, in a brilliant mesh of the two genres. Taking two college guys, who would probably seem more of a fit for a teen comedy at the start and placing them in a quaint English pub on the Moors is brilliant. Whilst the next two might have surpassed An American Werewolf in London for me, they may not have been made without the inspiration of Landis’ film.

Evil Dead 2 – Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead trilogy is brilliant and as far as I’m concerned this second installment, which is part sequel part remake, is the best of them. It’s a crazy, over the top, wacky, gore fest, and an absolute riot to watch. Bruce Campbell as Ash Williams is one of the best horror characters ever created, and he gives the perfect performance for the film. It’s so over the top and straight out of an old B Movie, which fits the whole tone of the film to perfection. With a bigger budget than the first film means that it could afford the special effects to allow a lot of gore. And Campbell and Raimi show of their brilliant comic ability. As long you’re not expecting jokes being thrown at you the whole time and you’re able to buy into Evil Dead II’s charm then this by far one of the best horror comedies ever.

Shaun Of The Dead – Edgar Wright and Simon Pegg are clearly huge fans horror, particularly George A. Romero’s Living Dead films and the aforementioned comedic efforts. A jumble of those is clearly the starting point for Shaun of the Dead, but there’s so much more to it than just a comedic parody of classic zombie films. It’s a proper horror film in its own right; there is one really horrific scene where a character has their guts ripped out of their stomach. The comedy is brilliant, as you would expect from the duo who brought us Spaced and Hot Fuzz, and in Nick Frost’s Ed they succeeded in creating one of the best comedic characters ever. There are so many laugh out loud moments, and the chemistry between Pegg and Frost is perfect, just look at the garden scene where they try to fend of zombies with records.
