The Coen Brothers are some of my favourite filmmakers around. Fargo, The Big Lebowski and O Brother Where Art Thou are some of my favourite films from my lifetime. And following in the vein of these comes their latest film; Hail, Caesar!

Following a few crazy days in the life of 1950s Hollywood ‘fixer’ Eddie Mannix (Josh Brolin), when star Baird Whitlock (George Clooney) is kidnapped. The film is very much classic Coen Brothers’ style as a very bizarre, brilliantly written comedy with a plot that actually has very little bearing on the film.

As well as Brolin and Clooney the whole cast is absolutely fantastic, and the film often takes asides to showcase some of the talent of these stars, Channing Tatum gets a song and dance number. Ralph Fiennes and Alden Ehrenreich shared one of the funniest scenes they you’ll see all year. Which brings us to the comedy, and obviously it’s more on off beat side as most Coen Brothers’ films are, but for me a lot of the comedic moments really did land.

Hail, Caesar! isn’t a perfect film, it doesn’t flow as well as some of their best films, some of the films with the film feel a little forced, and I think lacks the truly iconic characters that many of their past films have. The film could also potentially alienate those without a real interest in movies and their making, but I hope that enough of the comedy lands for most people even if that is not the case.

But overall Hail, Caesar! is a very entertaining film that truly following on the Coen Brothers classic off beat comedic style. If you are as big a fan of the Coen Brothers’ films as I am, I’m sure that you will enjoy Hail, Caesar!
